The search is on.
Well, we officially started our search for a Kindergarten/School for Mr. Lo. A search, you ask? Yes, in the lovely Seattle Schools, you get to choose which school your kids go to. No, it's not just your "neighborhood" school or the school that is closest to your house- that would be too easy, right?? The city is divided into "clusters" and you are guaranteed a school within your cluster but you may apply for any school in the district. Our cluster has 9, yes, that's 9, elementary schools in it. Luckily, we live in an area, or should I say, cluster, where all the schools are great with a few exceptional ones. In fact, the school that is closest to us (within walking distance) is an awesome school!! Lucky for us.
Now, I told myself that I wasn't going to get all "crazy" with this school choice stuff... Logan will do great where ever he is, it's the parents job to make sure the kid receives a good education, blah, blah, blah... but as it got closer to school tour time (yes, that's right, friends, we go to each school to tour the facility, talk with the principal, see the classrooms, etc), I found myself "researching" the different schools and getting a bit too wrapped up in this school choice process. Honestly, my friend, Erin and I have spent at least 20 hours on the phone in the last week just discussing the different schools. Now, me being a teacher in this wonderful district (cough), happen to know a lot of "inside" valuable information. Do I look at this from a parent's perspective or from a teacher's view? Hmmm...
This whole process is silly to me. It becomes a competition and contest to see "who is going to what school." Really, it is very business-like and the folks at the schools are trying to "sell" their schools to prospective parents. So, the tours have begun, open enrollment begins January 29th and we find out our school in the early Spring. Did I mention that we get to select our top three choices? Now that's considerate. We even got a "Thank you for visiting our school! Good luck with the search!" card from one of the schools we visited, I mean, toured.
In case your wondering, we are touring 4 schools, 2 last week and 2 more to check out this coming week. In my heart, I do know that Lo will be amazing where ever he is... and that he will probably end up at our local neighborhood school, the one we can walk to. Now that makes sense, doesn't it!?!
